Consideration of the creation of a by-law to regulate the discharge of firearms – Amended

Public Meeting – May 7, 2024
Editor’s Note: According to a message from Michele Meier: “The Municipality has now amended this Notice to REMOVE the exemption of lawfully hunting! We all need to show up on May 7th. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) will also be attending.”
Council is considering the following elements of the By-law:
Prohibitions
- No person will discharge a firearm within the Urban or Rural settlement areas as identified in the Trent Hills Official Plan.
- On any Municipal property.
- Within 300 metres of Conservation Authority lands, educational property, parks, campgrounds, places of worship.
- On any parcel less than 1.0 hectares (2.47 acres) in size.
- On, across or within 8 metres of any highway, right-of-way, private road or recreational trail.
- Within 150 metres of a dwelling on any residential properties.
Exemptions
- Police officers, Conservation officers, Peace officers etc. (acting in the course of duty or training).
- Blank ammunition as part of an event, historical display, education program etc.
- As part of normal farm practice or protection of property from nuisance wildlife.
- Under threat of imminent danger to person, crops, livestock, poultry or pets from dangerous animals.

Thank you Michele – I have updated the notice to the current one. Appreciate your input. Just so you know we are shutting down our publication as of March 31. The timing in terms of what is happening at this public meeting means we won’t be covering it. After a decade of serving the communities we can no longer sustain the publication. FYI
