OPP Rescue Person Who Fell Through the Ice

WHERE: Bradley Bay area

WHEN: Thurs., Jan. 11, 2024

Trent Hills – Fri., Jan. 12, 2024 –  Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and emergency crews were called to the Bradley Bay area yesterday shortly before 12:30 p.m. to assist an individual who had gone through the ice.

The person was out walking their dog when it ventured out onto the ice and fell through. The owner then attempted to rescue the dog and in turn, called 9-1-1 as they began to succumb to the icy waters of the Trent River. OPP, Northumberland Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Municipality of Trent Hills Fire Department all responded to the call.

An officer from the Campbellford Detachment was first to arrive on scene, entered into the frigid water and hauled the individual to safety. EMS attended the scene, treated the individual and transported them to a local hospital where injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The officer attended as a precautionary measure and has since been cleared. Unfortunately, the family pet did not survive the incident.

OPP remind everyone that no ice is safe ice and a rescue, should one occur, creates a dangerous situation for firefighters, paramedics, and police.
