Forum To Discuss Housing In Northumberland

Housing issues — past, present & future — will be discussed

On Wednesday, November 22, 2023, the Affordable Housing Committee is inviting community members to join in for a National Housing Day forum to examine the past, present, and future of housing in our community.

The National Housing Day forum is a chance to explore housing issues, build community capacity for kindness and bust some housing myths through review of housing policy, data and living experiences. The event will take place at Victoria Hall in Cobourg from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Event schedule:

Past: Presentation on the history of housing in Canada, and how policies and decisions have led to where we are today.

Present: A local perspective, offering a special report of Habitat for Humanity’s Housing Continuum study, which found that while there is much development happening in Northumberland County, housing remains grossly unaffordable for those who live and work within our community.

Future: A review of some of the initiatives underway to increase affordable housing stock in Northumberland.

“We believe that housing is not just about shelter; it’s about dignity and the right to a safe and affordable home,” says Dawn Campbell, Chair of the Affordable Housing Committee. “We invite all concerned citizens, businesses and organizations to join us on National Housing Day to make a difference in our community.”

To ensure the event remains accessible to all, the committee invites potential partners to join them on National Housing Day. There are three partnership opportunities available, all of which will help our community to better understand housing issues locally and encourage compassion for those struggling to access housing as a basic human right.

To learn more or become a partner, please contact anhousingcommittee@gmail.com or call 905-269-1944.
Partner support will play a crucial role in covering event expenses, including venue rental, securing a keynote speaker, providing refreshments, and promoting the forum.
