Join Wizard Of Oz Costume & Puppet Parade In Port Hope

The yellow brick road is coming to town — October 20

The Wizard of Oz was first seen at The Capitol Theatre in 1939…

Follow the yellow brick road with the Critical Mass people and all their friends October 20, 2023 to experience it in the very same place!

You are invited to a special Vintage Film Festival 30th Anniversary Community Event – a Wizard of Oz themed Costume & Puppet Parade – throughout downtown Port Hope!

Critical Mass Art and Two Blue Shirts Productions, have partnered with Marie Dressler Foundation (operators of the Vintage Film Festival), to create this special all-ages community event to share in the love of film.

Artist and celebrated puppet maker – Clelia Scala – is designing a whimsical and illuminated Wizard of Oz themed costume & puppet parade to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the festival. All are welcome to join the parade and encouraged to come dressed in your own costumes, or make an accessory to carry in the parade at one of our artist-led pre-parade workshops.

On Friday, October 20th, join Critical Mass and friends at twilight at the Little Station (behind Memorial Park), as we follow the yellow brick road to the Capitol Theatre to see The Wizard of Oz in its glory on the BIG screen! Northumberland’s La Jeunesse Choirs will also be onsite to perform a medley of scores from the iconic Wizard of Oz soundtrack.

Plus, leading up to the parade, you will have two opportunities to sign up for an accessory-making workshop led by Clelia, leading up to the event (with locations in Cobourg and Port Hope). All ages and skill levels are welcome to attend. You will be able to create your own accessories for the parade. At these workshops we plan to make a critical mass of… Poppies on sticks, Lollipop staffs, Glinda the Good Witch crowns & wands, Dorthy’s house lanterns, Ruby slippers on sticks, Tornados on sticks, and Glowing Emerald City hats! For the local artists, you will have also an opportunity to learn how to make your own masks using Warbla. And we will also need your artistics help painting some Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin-man Masks.

Please note:
All are welcome to participate in and observe the parade, however only Wizard of Oz ticket holders will be able to see the film at The Capitol Theatre. Tickets for the film will sell fast, so be sure to purchase yours in advance. Youth 25 & under are eligible to receive FREE tickets. All tickets (paid and free) must be reserved through The Capitol’s online ticketing system.
