International Human Rights Act passes through Parliament
Philip Lawrence, Member of Parliament for Northumberland–Peterborough South, said on the passing of his Private Members Bill, Bill C-281, through Parliament: “I am proud to announce that my Private Member’s Bill, the International Human Rights Act, has passed through the House of Commons with unanimous support. This bill contains important provisions that will help combat human rights abuses around the world.
“We are fortunate to live in a democracy, where we enjoy many rights and freedoms. While working on this bill, I had the opportunity to hear from many Canadians with family members abroad that have not had the same experience. Their stories of persecution and suffering have made it all the more clear how necessary and important this bill is.
“Bill C-281 will give more power to opposition parties to hold the government accountable for their work on human rights, help to limit foreign influence in the media, and restrict investments in companies that violate human rights or exploit developing nations.
“Conservatives strongly support measures to advance human rights at home and abroad. The provisions outlined in this bill will allow Canada to uphold our commitment to human rights in a strong and meaningful way.”
