Flag Raising to Celebrate Beginning of Pride Month

Raising the Progress Pride Flag on Community Flagpole

Celebrating Pride Month Beginning June 1, 2023

Trent Hills has Lots of  Events Planned

Cobourg – May 31, 2023 – June is Pride Month in Northumberland and across Canada. Tomorrow morning, Northumberland County will raise the Progress Pride Flag on our community flagpole to signify the beginning of Pride Month as well as Pride Season, which takes place over the summer months.

The Progress Pride Flag was designed in 2018 by American designer Daniel Quasar, who added a five-coloured chevron to the traditional six-coloured rainbow Pride Flag. The black and brown of the chevron represent marginalized people of colour, while the white, pink and light blue of the chevron reflect those of the Transgender Pride Flag designed by Monica Helms in 1999. In the traditional rainbow flag, the colours reflect the diversity and unity of the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Red stands for life, Orange for healing, Yellow for the sun, Green for nature, Turquoise for art, Indigo for harmony, and Violet for the soul.

Pride Month is an opportunity for 2SLGBTQI+ communities and allies to come together in a stand for inclusiveness and to celebrate the diversity, resilience and contributions of 2SLGBTQI+ community members.

Northumberland County strives to foster an inclusive, equitable and diverse community, where people can feel safe, valued and welcome to express themselves, be heard and feel respected. During Pride Month, we celebrate the progress that has been made while recognizing the work still to be done, and we recommit our efforts to promote education and awareness to end discrimination and violence based on sexual and gender identity.

This June, the County encourages community members to join in celebrating Pride Month by participating in local events and celebrations, helping to raise awareness online, and taking positive actions to work toward a more inclusive and welcoming community for all, each and every day.

Visit Northumberland.ca/PrideMonth for more information and a list of community events.
