Haute Goat is now a disc golf destination! On Friday, June 17, representatives of Council and the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce commemorated the opening of the eighteen-hole course with a small ceremony.
Brenda Whitehead, CEO of the Chamber, said about the new course, “We love the fact that it is sanctioned provincially. It meets standards that they can host a provincial tournament in September. It gives a really great reason for people to come out to Port Hope to see what’s going on and play. It also gives Port Hopians a place to go for another adventure!”
Darrell Bankes, the course designer, talked about building the course at Haute Goat. “It’s a great thing for a farm-based activity. It conserves the landscape the way it is. It’s a lot of fun and it gets people out enjoying the property.”
“This used to be a tree farm,” continues Bankes. “This creates a really kind of unique and kind of crazy-fun wooded property, because all the trees are planted in geometric patterns and shapes, so you get into a woodlot and dealing with roads and tunnels of trees, which are really fun for disc golf.”
The disc golf course has already been open for a month. “We run a great league on Wednesday nights,” said Bankes. “We’re lucky enough that Ganaraska Brewing stepped up and his sponsor the league for the season, and they’re helping out with prizes.”
Bankes also talked about how the course at Haute Goat is already a destination for disc golf tournaments. The course has hosted the qualifier for the National Amateur Disc Golf Tour, and will this weekend host a qualifier for the US Doubles Championship. “Winners of that tournament will get a chance to play in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where we have the biggest disc golf tournament in the world, the US Disc Golf Championships. People are going to win chances to go there.”
A round of disc golf at Haute Goat is $10 per person. You can also buy a year-long membership for $120.

Editor’s Note: For those of you who don’t know what disc golf is, here is an explanation from, Youtube, Everything Ultimate, on how to explain disc golf: “Disc golf is played much like golf except, instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc. The sport was formalized in the 1970s and shares with golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws).” I guess, because no one has explained it to me, the disc has to slot into that contraption behind the man in the photo. As for how the goats figure into it? Maybe they retrieve the discs when they go into the woods?
