The Northumberland Charity Golf Tournament is returning on June 11.
Hosted by the Knights of Columbus of Port Hope, the event supports two local organizations: Rebound Child and Youth Services, and Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre.
Brendan Fonovic, one of the organizers of the tournament, talks about he Knights of Columbus support for Rebound and Cornerstone. “We felt they really both fit niches of need within the community,” he says. “Rebound is there to help youth who are in trouble, and Cornerstone is there to help you know women and families who are in trouble.”
“We always hear in the news in the local papers about how basically Cornerstone is almost always operating capacity and they don’t have enough beds to service the need that there is within the community,” continues Fonovic. “We thought that this was a way, other than just giving them, say, a check for $500 every year, this way we could get a little more involved and make a more substantial contribution.”
Fonovic also talks the partnership with Rebound and Cornerstone. He says, “We do a lot of the organization, we touch base with the golf course. But they are very active, in terms of getting hole sponsors, bringing in golfers, bringing in swag to give out to the golfers; they’re very involved in that, and that helps it run smoothly.”
Although the tournament was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, last year it was back on. “In the past, we probably had, on average, seventy or 80, golfers. And last year, we had almost 130. Wow!” Fonovic said. “And so we’re really excited to sort of go forward this year and can build on the amazing year we had last year.”
Nearly doubling the number of golfers meant that the tournament brought in more than $10,000 – more than $5,000 each to Cornerstone and Rebound. “We were really pleased with the response from the community,” adds Fonovic.
Nancy Johnston, Executive Director of Cornerstone, says “We are so grateful to the Port Hope Knights of Columbus; they are a great group who are so passionate about their community. We deeply appreciate our partnership and that they choose to support Cornerstone each year through their charity golf tournament. It is community builders and events like this that help make Cornerstone’s work possible – because we cannot do it alone,” Johnston adds.
“The tournament is well run, and a fun day for all – we look forward to it each year,” says Cornerstone’s Manager of Community Engagement, Janelle Eisler. “Funds raised at the tournament help support Cornerstone’s vital programming and services, which ultimately supports local women and children impacted by family violence,” Eisler adds.
Gavin Hinton, Communications Manager at Rebound, says, “For many years, the Port Hope Knights of Columbus have been one of Rebound Child & Youth Services’ greatest supporters.”
Hinton adds, “The annual tournament has been successful thanks to the overwhelming support of Northumberland County’s golfing community. We cannot thank the Port Hope Knights of Columbus enough for the commitment they have shown to the children, youth, and families of Northumberland County – they have and continue to help us provide important programming that supports the mental health of our children and youth.
One of the hole sponsors is Lauria Hyundai – make a hole in one at the thirteenth hole, and you can win a car. “No one’s gotten it in ten years, but they’re happy to have the car there and support us that way,” Fonovic says.
