Local campaign to end period poverty
In celebration of Menstrual Hygiene Day, Period Promise Northumberland, a local partnership of Northumberland United Way and Thrive Northumberland, held a community-wide campaign collecting more than 2,000 products and over $500 to put towards ending period poverty in our community.
From May 13 to June 3, Northumberland County residents were invited to participate in the collection campaign by making a financial donation or dropping off period products to one of 8 locations across the community, including Nurturing Health Naturopathic Clinic, Nourish Boutique Spa, Cobourg Public Library, David’s No Frills, RE/MAX Quinte Ltd., Brighton office, YMCA Northumberland, Salvation Army in Port Hope, and Northumberland United Way.
“Thank you to everyone who contributed to Period Promise. Because of your generosity, Period Promise Northumberland will be able to help the many people in our communities who face the additional challenges of homelessness, living with a disability, or just the stigma around having a period at all,” says Bobbie Dawson, CEO, Northumberland United Way. “Although our collection campaign may be over, that doesn’t mean our work ends here.”
This year, Period Promise Northumberland created a community survey to better understand period poverty in the community. The survey is 26 questions, should take approximately 5-7 minutes to complete and is completely confidential. The data collected will be used to form a report on period poverty and equitable access in Northumberland County. No identifying information will be shared.

“I’m grateful for the amazing support that the Northumberland community has demonstrated to help us end period poverty locally,” says Nicole Beatty, Community Coordinator, Thrive Northumberland. “With each donation of menstrual products, we are able to reduce stigma and remove barriers for people to access immediate support.”
