The patio of the Beamish House in Port Hope was crowded with Progressive Conservative supporters, eagerly anticipating the election results Thursday evening.

By 9:30, CBC called the election for the riding of Northumberland-Peterborough South for David Piccini, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks, giving the young MPP his second election victory.

“I’m still pinching myself,” said Piccini afterward in a Q&A session with reporters.

“This is a historic result for Northumberland-Peterborough South, a historic result for Ontario,” said Piccini.

“The people of this community put their faith in me, they put their faith in our premier, they sent a strong, strong signal to this province that we can get the job done, that government can work for the people that we can get out of the way, harness our economic potential by building the critical infrastructure we need by keeping costs down by staying open in this province by making those critical investments in roads, bridges and highways.”

On the participation of the other candidates, Piccini said, “These individuals from every party that put their name on the ballot make our democracy stronger. I’m not a better MPP by sycophants. I’m a better MPP by being challenged. I’m a better candidate by being challenged. And so immense respect for everybody.”

Going forward, Piccini outlined the two top priorities of the re-elected Ford government: affordability and infrastructure. “I’m really excited about unlocking that economic might, and to do that you’ve got to build that infrastructure. So, we’re gonna see historic prosperity in the coming years, thanks to Premier Ford and this government.”
