The Lent Lane Thursday Market is now open for business! Thursday, May 26 marked the opening of the food, craft, and art market along the pedestrian path south from Walton Street, a collaboration of the Port Hope Maker’s Market and the Heritage Business Improvement Area (HBIA).
Members of the HBIA, Council, and Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce spoke on the occasion. Signe Langford, organizer of the market, said, “I want this to be the place where you come to pick up a few things for groceries.”
“It’s not just treat things or, oh it’s someone’s birthday; it’s where you come to get your bread for dinner, and your greens and your microgreens. And also, we’ve got a produce delivery service down here, and there’s going to be a pizza guy; we want people to come and eat,” added Langford.
Councillor Jeff Lees said, “It’s always exciting to see unique products made by our wonderful residents, to be able to give these artisans and makers the opportunity to showcase these items in an outdoor market, while giving our residents and new to those new to the area to shop locally.”
“Thank you to the HBIA and their vision and Signe for all your hard work with and for giving visitors another reason to make Port Hope their summer destination,” added Lees.
Maria Papaioannoy-Duic, President of the Chamber, addressing Langford said, “It’s one thing to have an idea. But there’s a difference between having an idea and making that idea into a reality, and this is what you guys have done here.”
“It’s an amazing, good opportunity of bringing together the right team to make a vision happen,” continued Papaioannoy-Duic. “Leadership is not about one person, it’s about finding the right people to make the idea happen. And it’s amazing to look down Lent Lane and see all these vendors, some seasoned, some new, but each of them is trusting that this market will help them get to their next place their next goal of their business.”
